Should i buy logos
With Logos, take all you want and buy more from the field via digital download. Ben is only going to be in Africa for a year. How many books does he really need to take with him? The trick is to use your carry-on space effectively. Just a thought. Their revenue stream is completely dependent on selling content; each have base packages that have books many may consider filler and they all must continue to sell content to survive.
While marketing and corporate vision may differ, they all essentially fall into the base premise of your article. The possible exception is BibleWorks, but a case could be made based upon the premise of your article for them as well. Hundred of Bible versions you will never use etc. I disagree that Bible software promotes poor research and provides books never read. To be honest, these software companies provide the ability to find relevant material by topic, verse or keyword that print books can never offer.
The idea is to use the books as reference books rather than books you read cover to cover. If one is working with a particular verse you can actually find where a particular author referenced that verse.
Or perhaps an author references the Church Fathers and in a click you are in the original material referenced. Footnotes actually get read because they are not hidden in the back of the resources, but can be referenced by hovering over the note.
This works really well in grammars, commentaries, dictionaries, theological resources and journals. While there are resources available to read cover to cover, many of the most useful resources are reference material that adapts well to use with Bible software.
Using one of your examples, you can actual find relevant material in the Works of Jonathan Edwards given your topic or pericope you are studying in any of the software packages referenced above. The reader can then determine the extent to which they choose to pursue the content further. While I disagree with the premise of your article, I do appreciate you voicing your opinion and in no way want to infer any criticism on you. We just disagree.
As far as professional Bible software goes that lets you do extensive work with Hebrew and Greek , the big options are either BibleWorks Accordance for Mac or Logos. Since Logos is about the only serious option for building a proprietary digital theological library for professional use, I just addressed the post to Logos.
Things ARE changing. Sure, not today or even this week BUT things are changing. What will the future be for the printed page? Some form of e-reader. Librarians are worried that they will be out of business.
Thomas U a large Catholic U in Mpls is divesting itself of printed things as digital comes online. What a boon! The bigger question. IMO someone will pick up their stuff and make it available some how, I have no doubt, if they fade away. I have talked to the Logos top brass about this on several occasions at ETS. Will there upgrade fees? Maybe Some seem inevitable, but they will be minimal. But the convienence of e-books is worth it. I go to Africa this summer with several thousand books at my disposal.
My son moves there also. The expense of taking even books would be enormous but the laptop will travel with him. Will the current digital collection become the 8-track of today? I doubt it. I have a long history in the digital world. Moreover, printed books are not necessarily protected from destruction. I can restore my Logos in a matter of hours if my laptop is stolen.
It would take years to restore my print collection. The searchability of the e-book is a key feature. Lugging a box of books is back-breaking but using them is another matter. Sure, some books will have to be lugged but at least for serious sermon work, Logos has a great selection of digital material available. And searching is quite easy and offers greater time management them paging through a book.
I lived through the transition of using printed books and a computer Bible software program. A fraction of the time to look up a word in the paper lexicon. For the record I am 56 am have been doing sermon work for nearly 40 years! Logos is efficient and powerful and I use far more sources in my work digitally than I ever used in print.
Reading one book at a time? Not an issue. On your logic. Just check them out from a library since you can read only one book at a time anyway! Logos will facilitate reading snippets. Of course, one must always consider context. But e-readers are no more prone than print. The feel of the book in the hand. E-readers are here to stay. But who wants to go back to a manual typewriter because they enjoy the clackety-clack of the keys?
Gimme an iPad any day! A postscript. I have been a bookseller for years and a bibliophile longer. The sewn binding is virtually a thing of the past. I have Puritan imprints in my collection that have survived more than years! Take a look at the NIC series these days. Good luck passing them down to anyone. The glue will dry out and crack. But the original owner will be dead so que sera sera! Ok Parallax. I made a call and know who you are.
You are writing from a very limited perspective. Sure, there is stuff on Logos that is not as useful, so ignore it. But one can build a fine, current collection of good books that will be useful in any ministry context with Logos. When you get to your restricted access nation, good luck getting more resources. Base packages are the starting point for studying the Bible with Logos.
They combine a digital library of trusted biblical resources with time-saving Bible study tools. Features: Includes some Logos 9 features. Features: Includes many Logos 9 features. Features: Includes most Logos 9 features. When you add a new book to your Logos library, you increase the power and usefulness of the entire system, because that book now links to and from every other book.
It is less like adding a printed book to a bookcase and more like adding a new Christian with his spiritual gifts to your congregation—it improves and strengthens the entire system. The most important part of the Logos system is its power to find and relate information across an entire library. With a print library, it may take me hours of searching bookcases, looking for Scripture indexes, and referencing endnotes to find all my library has to tell me about a particular verse or subject.
Logos makes it as simple as typing in a keyword or clicking a Scripture verse. Within seconds it will search an entire library, organize the results, and show the best ones; one more click will begin a deeper search. Logos also makes it easy to do word studies and to find basic or advanced information about the original Greek and Hebrew.
It allows notes and easily formats footnotes. It is rich in features that display the unique strengths of software. Over the last few years Logos has begun extending Logos to be more than a research library.
Recently, for example, they added Logos Mobile Ed—video-based courses taught by prominent theologians. These courses were created specifically by and for Logos and feature the teacher looking straight into the camera, making them very natural and intimate.
The ability to take courses through Logos—to watch the lectures, read the books, and take notes all within the system—adds a lot of value to the software. Logos offers many different forms of training—major conferences often have a Logos-sponsored breakout session, you can take the Logos Mobile Ed course, or watch online video tutorials. From personal experience I can say that you will use Logos better, and alleviate some of your frustrations, if you learn how to use it better.
I often see Logos at major conferences advertising as software that may appeal to the casual Bible reader. I would urge people to be very cautious before making a significant investment. It is a useful aid in Bible study, but is very unlikely to be the key that unlocks new spiritual depths. While it is certainly useful for any Christian, the greatest value is for those who have to do the greatest amount of Bible study and who can purchase the greatest number of resources for it.
At the very least, give it a good test-drive before making the financial investment. Logos Needs Resources Logos cannot be better than the resources it contains. Your experience of Logos will vary proportionally with the resources you purchase for it. In other words, if you want to get a lot out of Logos, be prepared to spend a lot on it. That needs some nuance: adding good resources increases the power of the system. I have a Logos 7 Platinum and was wondering to upgrade to Logos 8 Platinum.
Not sure whether it is worth is and whether or not I can use the discount from you to do it? Hey, Alex! Really depends on what you use Logos 7 for.
I just ordered Logos8, Platinum. Thank you for your review, it helped to solidify my decision. I already owned Logos7 and use it all the time, but can benefit from putting more time to learn all the features. I would highly recommend the software for anyone who is serious about Bible study. I have been using Logos at the time I started — Gramcord since and during Seminary. I have owned it for a time now and actually regret investing in it. Like today I was trying I was trying to work on a teaching.
It was downloading updates. I cancelled the download and then found out it was doing it anyway. I agree with you on your comments, and then some. I have Logos 7, along with thousands of titles. Full disclosure, I am a scholar and have taught theology at graduate and undergraduate levels. A friend of mine, a grad student in theology, worked for Faithlife. She told me a colleague there told her she was wasting her time learning Greek because Logos does it all for you.
That is a chilling but telling remark. I use Logos for Bible study and it is hardly—very. Thanks for this article, spread the word. Apparently I get the discount for Verbum base packages, but not for Standard Gold.
Hi Jennings! The coupon only applies to new base package purchases, not upgrades. FYI I had to talk to two different sales reps, but they got the coupon to go through as desired. Hi Jeffrey…would you think the stater pack would worth? You can read my thoughts on it here. When you wrote this info in — what version of Logos gives the details that you referenced? Please advise. Hi, Kim! I think most of my examples here rely on features that are available at the Bronze level.
Curious how the date at the top of the article says Oct 23, , but some comments say they were posted 2 years ago.
Did I lose a year-and-a-half of my life somewhere? Jeffrey, nice review. The Batman-Batmobile analogy was especially good, as was the decision flowchart for those considering purchasing.
I was wondering if you have any suggestions for improvements for Logos 7? Abram J-K mentioned a few in his Logos 7 review. Good question on the date discrepancy. I was paid nothing up front for writing this review.
I was invited to try Logos 6 in and Logos 7 in before they were released, and as far as I know, I was under no obligation to review either. On the other hand, that early invitation to try Logos 6 and 7 was a nice treat.
I just added a few notes on this to the article in case future folks have similar questions. Of course, I used Logos before I was an affiliate. I owe much of the content on this site to that tool! Many years ago when Apple came out with the iPhone, the Bible software did not support it, I wrote them several emails telling them that it would be worth their while to include Apples IOS for their customers who liked the Apple products, they evidentially did not believe me as they were not interested at the time.
As a side note several years after that they did make it available for the iPhone and other Apple products. Anyway, I started looking around and since I had already heard of Logos Bible software I gave it a look and have not regretted it.
It is my go to Bible software, it offers such a wide variety of products to go along with it and is so easy to integrate all the tools. Recently, they rolled out distinctive base packages for many faith traditions, evangelical, Lutheran, Pentacostal, etc. It features a protestant Bible version, Lexham Engish Bible LEB , as well as the Lexham Bible Dictionary, lots of photos and infographics, reading plans, and other resources, and group study features.
All of the platforms are interchangeable. So content you purchase at Verbum. Might there be one that does? You can also use my code when you call sales. Thank you, it does! I already had an Academic Discount, and wanted to see if another would work. But now I know: no stacking.
I currently own Logos 5 Gold and love it. It really depends on what you want to do. The team built a really extensive comparison chart of all the packages; you should check that out, as well! I tired to use the coupon and logos said it was not valid and would not honor it. Pretty disappointing. I just tried it out in checkout and it works fine. Wow…great overview of the New Logos 6. Can you give some details about your search for when God spoke to David?
I refer to the actual query string. This is the first visit to your site, but surely not the last. Great job. It does get frustrating at times but the blessings, the works one has access to, how it can be used to leverage the knowledge you have at your finger tips with the tools you have access to-definitely worth any frustration anyone else has.
To me the most beneficial tool is one I used for years since it first came out in but is not published anymore-The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. You can buy a used copy but having it on Logos helps a lot! Been using Logos since the 3x days. I too would be interested in that affiliate program. I am guessing you got that set up some time back. Smoyer faithlife. Well, hey there Josh! I hope you are yours are well.
Blessings to you. Hmmm… somehow I missed the affiliate program… can you share more details? Hi, Abram. Nate at Faithlife is the guy to talk to about that: Nathan. Great post! Thank you! What level of package do you use?
Thanks again for all of your effort with this! How about a tour of Logos? But if it is for you, I can get you a sweet discount. That said, I want to share two ways that the product has upped their game this time.
