How is longitude calculated
Determining latitude was relatively easy because it could be calculated from the altitude of the sun at noon but for longitude, early navigators had to rely on dead reckoning. This was inaccurate on long voyages out of sight of land and a solution to the problem of accurately calculating longitude eluded navigators for many centuries until John Harrison invented the chronometer in the 18th.
Harrison was tempted by the prize and set out to produce an accurate timepiece which could be used to compare local time to Greenwich time which the timepiece would be set to. He completed his chronometer in after several previous attempts and this proved to be so successful that it was used by Captain Cook in his voyages after Angular distance between meridians of longitude.

Up until a majority of the world used Greenwich to set their clocks by. Although it did not influence the decision it seemed a fitting tribute to the hard work of John Flamstead and the Royal Observatory. One of these clocks can be seen today at the Observatory along with John Harrison's clocks. Scientific clocks were later used and the Observatory became a testing centre for new timepieces.
